VP, Risk and Insurance - Hybrid (Finance)

This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering comprehensive risk management programs across Vitalant's multiple operating units. By identifying, mitigating, and transferring risk, the VP will ensure optimal risk management and cost outcomes through effective risk financing and claims management strategies. The position also directs insurance broker activity, serves as the primary contact for commercial insurance underwriters, and collaborates with in-house and external counsel to mitigate legal exposure.
The VP will act as a key liaison for executive risk, property and casualty claims, and insurance matters, while also shaping long-term strategic risk management plans that address customer, operational, technological, employee, and environmental risks.

- Lead Risk Management Strategy - Identify, evaluate, and implement a comprehensive risk management program that aligns with Vitalant's strategic goals, including risk retention and mitigation initiatives.
- Optimize Risk Financing & Transfer - Develop and execute cost-effective risk financing and transfer programs in collaboration with Finance, while conducting key risk assessments, claims analysis, and actuarial reviews.
- Oversee Insurance Programs - Manage the organization's insurance portfolio, including broker relationships, policy renewals, coverage negotiations, and compliance with insurance agreements.
- Drive Claims & Incident Management - Direct reporting, tracking, and resolution of claims, incidents, and lawsuits, ensuring appropriate reserves and settlement strategies.
- Support Internal & External Stakeholders - Provide risk analytics, advisory support, and education to business units, ensuring informed decision-making around risk assessment, transfer, and mitigation.
- Manage Third-Party Providers - Oversee relationships with brokers, carriers, consultants, and third-party claims administrators to ensure efficient risk and claims management.
- Collaborate Across Departments - Work closely with Legal, Finance, Enterprise Risk Management, HR, Supply Chain, and Environmental Health & Safety to support loss control, safety, and operational risk initiatives.
- Ensure Contractual Risk Management - Review contracts, leases, and agreements to ensure proper risk transfer provisions and alignment with organizational objectives.
- Monitor Compliance & Industry Trends - Stay ahead of regulatory changes, industry best practices, and risk management developments, ensuring policies remain compliant and effective.
- Manage Budget & Reporting - Participate in budget preparation and oversee department spending while maintaining transparency in reporting and analytics.
Requirements
Knowledge/ Education
Bachelor's degree required; Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited College of Law preferred.
Knowledge of executive risk, property and casualty insurance coverages required.
Licenses/ Certifications
ARM or CPHRM (Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management)Certification preferred.
CPCU certification preferred.
Experience
10 years of related experience required. To include
• Five years of risk management and insurance experience, or combination risk management/insurance, and claims/litigation management.
• Prior leadership and management experience
Transfusion medicine, biotherapies, life science, pharmaceutical, hospital, or other health care experience preferred.
Experience with recognized Risk Information Management System preferred.
Experience working in an in-house corporate environment preferred.
