Chemist (Finance)
Job responsibilities to include working as part of a team of engineers, chemists, and technicians providing support to NASA while maintaining a strong consciousness about safety. This position will directly support International Space Station (ISS) as well as all future exploration missions relating to Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS). The successful candidate will be able to provide chemical and scientific support and insight into the development of fluid systems and mechanical assemblies which support the research and development of water recovery efforts for ISS and advanced exploration initiatives. They will also will be able to provide all around hands on analytical support in the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems wet chemistry laboratory. The candidate should also be able to support writing standard operating procedures, method development, as well as interpretation and reporting of test results. This position encompasses duties and responsibilities for maintaining life support systems aboard the ISS, discovering methodologies for making existing ISS ECLSS more efficient, and for troubleshooting and correcting anomalous phenomena aboard the ISS.
Responsibilities
• When new work that requires analytical support is being proposed, cooperate with the leads to develop the budget estimate for the proposed support.
• Attend all Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) for tests that require analytical support and communicate to the TRR Boards the readiness and availability of laboratory staff and equipment to support test operations.
• Ensure that all sample analyses called out in test plans are completed as required and that the data is reduced, compiled, recorded, and preserved as quality records when required.
• Ensure that proper quality control procedures governing sample collection/receipt, chain of custody, sample prep, sample analysis, data recording, etc. are in place and follow those accordingly.
• Coordinate with branch personnel, principle investigators, team lead and laboratory staff to react to unexpected test events that require changes to planned analytical support requirements.
• Ensure that branch analytical equipment is properly maintained and calibrated to meet current and upcoming test requirements. Ensure that chemical inventories and supplies are available to meet current and upcoming test requirements.
• Identify any capital equipment replacement or upgrade needs required to sustain ES62's capability to support anticipated testing. Maintain an ongoing list of desired replacements and upgrades that can be quickly referenced when unexpected project and/or institutional funding becomes available on short notice.
• Reduce data and produce documentation for Water Recovery System (WRS) related ground testing.
• Participate in running all testing supported by the Environmental Control and Life Support System laboratory.
• Complete chemical orders, purchasing, and inventory.
• Support standard and reagent production.
• Organize chemicals based on classification as well as coordinate with hazardous waste on various waste disposal.
